My latest artist profile for ISSUE magazine featured artists Anna Myers and Scarlett Blanchard who were hard at work on their show “Morphogenesis” which opened Oct.6 at The Art Studio, Inc. The show is on display through Oct. 26.
I met them at the beginning of September in the printmaking lab at Lamar University where the pair met a decade ago. As usual, it proved to be a fun time, but it was quickly evident that writing the story would be a challenge as they talked over each other — a lot. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fascinating, spirited and fun conversation — it’s just hard to separate out individual quotes, especially when as happened frequently, one would finish the other’s sentence.
I think I managed to capture the spirit of the pair, but that is something for the reader to judge.
The show was superb and I was especially pleased they sold a lot of work (we managed to pick up a small piece from each to add to our ever-increasing collection).
Interviewing artists is my favorite thing to do. I like to think of them as more of a conversation between colleagues than interviews (which means I often have way more information than I can use, but what fun it was getting it).
Thank you Anna and Scarlett, I hope it was as much fun for you as it was for me.
